1,000 council jobs facing the axe

The full scale of the financial woes faced by Lincolnshire County Council has been revealed.

Up to 1,000 jobs could be axed at the county's largest employer as the aftershocks of the recession hit the public sector.

The Echo reported in October on the threat of budget cuts from central Government – to pay for the risks taken by city bankers.

It was estimated that up to 850 jobs could go over three years. Now it is likely to be more like 1,000 over five years – a big bite out of the 6,228-strong workforce, excluding teachers.

Lincolnshire is one of the worst affected authorities in England, equalled only by seven other authorities including Nottinghamshire.

And it equates to finding £80m of savings from the council's £600m budget in each of the next three years.

This budget does not include schools.

Chief executive of the county council Tony McCardle said: "Due to an inevitable major downturn in public sector funding next year and onwards, Lincolnshire County Council is currently working to find more efficiency savings and move to new ways of working,"

“Jim, thanks for not pulling me down. I say what is the truth (at least for me), I worked for the local Constabulary for so many years. Lots of money could be saved in so many ways, but it's all so PC nowadays that I just gave up bothering to bang my head against a brick wall!”

“Why do some people hate ¿Council¿ workers? Is it because they perceive them as having an easy ride while the rest of the country suffers the recession alone? You know the staff I¿m talking about ¿ the ones recently organising gritting our roads round the clock and providing essential services to the elderly?? Some comments on here serve no more useful person than show the uninformed ignorance of the people who wrote them. Council workers have families and mortgages too - JUST LIKE YOU!! Believe it or not, I doubt they enter local government to sit around drinking tea and chatting any more than they do for the menial wages ... there was always an, as it turns out, incorrect perception that your job was safe as a Council worker. Now that we can all see that¿s not true, cut them a bit of slack. Rather than sickly enjoying the fact that some of our very hard working public servants may be made redundant, be concerned that cuts in YOUR local government mean an attack on YOUR local infrastructure one way or another. You¿ll be the same people moaning about library closures and potholes in 6 months time. Shame on you all.”

“Has anybody else noticed that the only two people who can string a sentence together into something legible without including a selection of quite frankly ridiculous spelling errors, are Ken Barlow and Lynn (although I'd expect nothing less from Lynn). I don't have enough relevant experience or knowledge to make a useful point on this article, but we seem to be reading intelligent, grammatically correct and meaningful arguments from Ken and then irrelevant moronic insults as replies.

Just be glad Lynn's arguing the case for you lot, otherwise I'd suggest you were commenting from the railing outside the job centre on your benefit-funded iPhone whilst smoking roll-ups.

    No offence.”
