A range of stalls were also present.
Organiser Kelly Hubbard was delighted with the turn-out:
"We didn't get a lot of funding so we relied on donations and support from businesses like The Scene, Asda, Evolution Hair and the Premium Dance Centre, as well as money from wristband sales.
"It's been amazing - I was worried about space as it's a small area but it's been busy early on. There's been a good mix of people.
Among those performing on the stage was local singer-songwriter Helen Francis, who appeared after entering an open audition.
An LBGT drama group and drag artists also performed.
"All cities need a Pride and most of them do have one - we are a biggish city and we are celebrating equality. Today people have the chance to be themselves without abuse or being stared at."
Kelly also confirmed that the successful event would also run next year, whatever the budget available, and that organisers hoped to arrange a parade alongside the music event.
Drag act Kandy Kane and Strawberry Whip were enjoying the attention as they posed for photos with revellers.
"We're supporting Pride here today - it is so important and we are a family-friendly act who want people to get involved," said Kandy Kane.
"We've had a lot of photos taken! We're here to celebrate diversity and we're performing on the stage today and also at the after-party at The Scene tonight - they can't get rid of us!" added Strawberry Whip.
