At a reported cost of £170m to make, it is the most expensive video game ever created.
The open-world video game is billed as a parody of modern life with a dark sense of humour and cynicism running throughout.
The player embarks on missions to help the characters through their life of bloodshed and crime.
Josh Chapman, deputy manager at Lincoln GAME said: "We've had people pre-ordering for quite sometime.
"The launch creates a nice vibe in the store, we were really excited and so were the cusotmers.
"We had lots of things to give out to folks and people came from all over because I think we were the only store to do the midnight launch.
"There was a good mix of young and old- you wouldn't think it but we have a lot of older gamers in their 50s and 60s.
"GTA only comes out once every four or five years so is always hugely anticipated."
