This will be followed by a two year extensive programme of stone replacement and repairs both inside and out as well as restoration of the stain glass.
Director of development Peter Coleman said: “We are working hard to keep the building in a good condition which, given the current economic climate is becoming increasingly difficult, so please help us keep one of this countries heritage icons preserved so people can enjoy its beauty for many years to come.
“Fundraising has already started, however we still need to raise a considerable amount to complete the project.”
There are a number of ways people can help. They can either make a donation towards the project, have a message carved into one of the new stones as part of the Sponsor a Stone initiative or purchase one of the pieces of historic stones that will be removed as part of the project.
