Strikes have taken place at Government offices across Lincolnshire in a bid to stop cuts being made to redundancy pay-outs.

Picket lines were mounted outside civil servant offices in a bid to prevent ministers cutting back on settlements for staff losing their jobs.

Currently, pay-outs can be up to six-years wages for some members of staff.

The changes will mean civil servants who earn £30,000 or more will have redundancy pay capped at two times their yearly salary.

Those earning less than that will still get up to between two and three years' salary.

Around 300 workers from Jobcentre Plus offices, benefits departments, tax offices and courts have taken part in the strikes, which have been organised by the Public and Commercial Services union.

The strike action began yesterday and is due to last until the end of today. The full scale of the disruption will not be known until the industrial action is over.

Graham Peck, PCS Lincolnshire branch secretary representing the Department for Work and Pensions workers, said: "The strikes are necessary to prevent a move which would have a seriously detrimental affect on staff and services.

"If we sat back and did nothing, these changes would be put through and staff are not happy about them."

“instead of blaming the ordinary workers, its time people understand that we will all be paying for the bankers mistakes. cut bankers bonuses not services”

“I would just like to say that Nick Parker is anything but a little trouble maker, and I'm not sure how launching a personal attack on him will solve anything. Nick Parker is a decent human being standing up for the rights of the people. He gives up nearly all of his free time in a bid to do this, and I'm sure you wouldn't be complaining if he were supporting a cause you had a little more sympathy for. He is not a selfish greedy civil servant as you suggest. He has organised demos and rallies supporting various sectors of the community, on issues that do not directly impact on him. He's someone I have a lot of respect for, and the world would be a better place if there were more Nick Parkers out there”

“I don't want to strike. You lose two days pay and have to stand outside in sub-zero temperatures with very little reward! But the alternative is to allow the Government to rip up our contracts and make it easier for us to be made redundant. When the Government was asked to stop bankers' bonuses, they said they had to respect their contracts. Why don't they apply the same rule for low-paid civil servants? We do a massively important job, taking new claims for benefits, looking for jobs for people, and helping the public with benefit enquiries. I think that the proposed changes would make it easier for a private company to take over our service. As users of the trains, gas, water and electricity will know, privatisation has a detrimental effect on public services. As workers, whether from the public- or private-sector, we need to stick together against this cuts agenda. If you want to blame someone for the state of the economy, look no further than the politicians who gave themselves a pay rise of £1000 last week, or the bankers who continue to gorge themselves with obscene bonuses after the financial mess they've created. As for the personal attacks on me, get a life.”

“Typically no mention in this article about why alot of people are on strike, The Government wants to make it easier and cheaper to cut civil service jobs. Although this would see me unemployed i am striking because of the already overstretched public service becoming even more so. Having signed on myself i know that the level of service is not what anybody expects, just imagine how 'good'it will be less 25% of its staff. This issue will not be going away soon and i feel we need to stand up for it. Even if the press just say its about money, it really isn't.
As for the personal attacks on people, is their really nothing better to say?”
