It is feared 400 NHS workers in Lincolnshire could be facing the axe as the NHS faces its biggest shake up in decades.

They are employed in the commissioning arm of NHS Lincolnshire and are mostly based at Cross O'Cliff in Bracebridge Heath, near Lincoln.

It is believed that they will be directly hit by the Government's plans to radically reform the NHS.

NHS Lincolnshire chief executive John McIvor says many of the workers – including staff who are highly experienced in patient care and medicine management – will be ultimately be re-employed by groups of county GPs.

The Government's white paper on Monday states that the country's 152 primary care trusts, including NHS Lincolnshire, will be abolished in favour of GPs forming individual consortia to commission patient care including hospital services.

But others including teams of accountants, admin workers, gardeners, builders, press officers and human resources workers face a more uncertain future.

Mr McIvor said the morale of these workers must be kept afloat until the trust becomes defunct in 2013.

"It is a long time to try to manage and make changes when staff are uncertain," said Mr McIvor. "There will be negotiations in the coming weeks and big decisions made in four to five months.

"There are still jobs needing to be done but many will be done in different organisations.

"And some people won't want to move to where new jobs are."

“it is Andrew lansley who is calling the shots. he is our candidate in Cambridge and they do not come more ignorant than this one. he has no idea what he is doing, he lives in luxury and has no respect for the average working person.”

“I wonder if the GP's have actually been asked if they want to undertake this huge project that is being thrust upon them? Didn't they train for 5 years to be medics, not administrators or accounts managers, which is what they are being asked to be.If the health service is in a mess, (which it is!) then it needs sorting out by people who are trained to do the job. Managers, manage, doctors treat the sick, lets just leave it that way, and maybe just cut down the number of managers! More Indians and less chiefs will certainly save money!”

“Martin (or whichever gossamer-skinned lackey it was), you can report my comments all you like. The fact remains that if you think the only modern example of a Bismarck health care system is what Obama's proposing for the USA, then you really do not know what you're talking about.

France, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland have all implemented it successfully. As I said before, go and educate yourself properly regarding this matter - I'm not here to spoonfeed you.”

“Bismarck? You've got to be kidding right?

Because unregulated child labour for the win? There's this thing about German Right-wing thinking from the late 19th century - it wasn't all that smart.

The closest modern example of a Bismarck health system is basically what Obama is trying to set up in the US - even by their standards it's pretty worthless.”

“These changes don't go far enough. The Beveridge method of health provision should be abandoned in favour of Bismack at the earliest possible opportunity. Unfortunately, no government will ever have the stones to do so because of the sacred cow status that has inexplicably been bestowed upon this bloated, inefficient mess of a health service.”
