"That means the overwhelming majority of people have ensured they are correctly licensed.

"In order to be fair to the law-abiding majority who do pay for their licence, we'll continue to pursue the small minority of people who do not pay.

"We do understand some people may find it difficult to pay in one go, which is why we offer numerous ways to spread the cost."

A colour TV licence currently costs £145.50 and is required by anyone watching or recording TV programmes on TV or a computer.

People who do so without a licence are risking court prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000.

“In years to come our grandchildren will be reading these archives thinking what a crazy world they must have lived in then, going to court for not paying to watch the tv which they have bought with the electricity that they pay for!”

“IT_MAN - - - If it was sold off we wouldn't be much better off as we would (going by the present), have to pay for unemployment, council tax etc for the ones who lost their jobs. As I see it the only ones better off would be the unemployed or very low waged with a TV licence to start with. The licence fee though has for years been a total rip-off, or as a lot see it 'demanding money with menaces'.”

“I too would like to see the license done away with, but if it was sold off most of them would lose their jobs and perks but we would all better off.”

“It's a pity they won't allow a licence that's as old as most of the programs, or a few copies of one to cover the repeats.”
