POLICE needed their best horse wrangling skills after 15 of the animals attempted to escape from Lincoln’s South Common.

Officers were called just after 5am yesterday, when the drove was seen walking from Broadgate up Canwick Hill.

Lincolnshire Police spokesman Dick Holmes said the horses were swiftly returned to their home.

"Someone very quickly got them back into their field and by 5.25am the road was clear," he said.

“Thankyou hazel i think gnome chomsky on common ground you need to get the facts more before you mouth off it has never been up to the people of lincoln to pay for the fencing on the common and i was very angry that it has not been maintained. one huge gap where they can clearly get out a single set of post and rail would sort this and one very bad repair job where new planks had been nailed to a rotted old middle plank thats what i was getting at its damn lucky no horses were hurt/killed and same goes for road users”

    “Gnome Chomsky, On Common Ground
I know C and that is not what she meant.

C tried to help but with 15 galloping horses it was mission impossible to prevent them charging ontothe main road. Her worry was a horrific accident causing death.

It would have been stupid to try to contact the owners leaving the horses speeding along main roads.

Help was needed to contain them to prevent an accident.

The police did come out in response to the loose horses. They were flagged down after loseing them.

Thankfully all returned to their home.

Lincoln City council are responsible for the maintenance of the fencing on the common but with vandalism it is a hard job.”

“Sorry C, as I have always understood it, common ground allows you to keep livestock on land you do not personally own or rent. I have never understood it to mean that the rest of us are responsible for the cost of keeping your animals from wandering off. I presume, perhaps unreasonably, that you expected the police to know who each horse belonged to, and that the owners had reported them to be missing, despite their patrol car happening to be 'passing' rather than responding to a telephone call.

    But that's just me ...”

“You would think this would be an ideal job for Lincolnshire police as COWBOYS. But asking them to actually get out of their cars and also to help is maybe expecting too much.”
