Children at Lincoln County Hospital are to benefit from new breathing equipment costing £90,000.

The specially designed equipment is used to clear children's airways by removing anything that might have been swallowed or inhaled, such as peanuts, coins or drawing pins.

The equipment will be used in theatres at Lincoln County Hospital and Pilgrim Hospital, Boston.

Staff at Pilgrim Hospital, Boston, recently attended a special training day run by ear, nose and throat consultant Michael Oko and ENT staff along with representatives from the Karl Storz company that made the device.

Mr Oko said that there was a need in the hospitals for the new hi-tech equipment.

"It's brilliant, brand new and state-of-the-art," he said.

"We are training our staff to use this equipment in these sort of emergencies so they are familiar with it and able to cope when these situations arise.

"Our patients will benefit greatly from this investment."
