THE A52 between Boston and Skegness has been named as one of the UK's most improved roads for reducing, fatal and serious crashes.

Data released by the Road Safety Foundation found that there were 27 fatal and serious crashes between 2006 and 2010, compared with 57 between 2001 and 2005, a decrease of 53 per cent.

In 2008, Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, invested around £200,000 obtained from a Rural Development Project, in improved signing and lining including a central ladder in wider sections, a bend signing scheme, introduction of a 50mph speed limit and interactive signs.

"It was a massive piece of work," he added.

"We dropped the speed limit to 50mph and some villages were lower and we undertook work to narrow the carriageway down so drivers felt they were travelling faster than they actually were.

"Previously when you drove down that road it was quite shocking some of the behaviour going on.

"Now it's quite a pleasant drive."

Figures supplied to the Target by LRSP show that between 2002 and 2008 there were 10 fatals, 34 serious injuries and 169 slight injuries.

In the period 2008 post improvements to July 12 that has fallen to five fatals, 17 serious and 134 slight.

Mr Siddle added: "We have brought in engineering solutions to a problem that was taking people's lives."

“I'm glad they added 'for safety'......as the road itself is a nightmare, pretty much as peak3 said.

I'm amazed anyone actually makes it as far as skeggy when using the the A52.

It's about time LCC invested in more than just speed limits, and concentrated on getting people to the coast more effectively.”

“The A52 from boston to skegness is not a pleasant drive at all, its very frustrating with countless lorries using it & limited to 40mph, countless tractors holding everyone up in both directions, this is why many people take the risk at chance overtaking that i have seen many times. The road is very poor & cant cope with the volume of heavy traffic especially in the summer time. There are only a few sections that are 50mph but in reality you are lucky to average 35mph during the day. This is supposed to be a main road & the only certificate it deserves is a Lincolnshire poorest road certificate.”
