A bomb disposal unit from RAF Coningsby has rescued a seal pup washed up on the Lincolnshire coast.

During their daily sweep of the beaches at RAF Wainfleet, members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team discovered the abandoned pup.

The common seal was only two or three days old and still had its umbilical cord attached.

Sgt Greg Baker who found the seal pup said: "Before approaching the pup, we made sure the mother was nowhere to be seen, because she wouldn't have taken kindly to us going near her offspring."

Sally Taylor, who works at RAF Wainfleet, informed Natureland Seal Sanctuary in Skegness and arrangements were made for staff to get onto the beach to recover the pup.

Nicky Yeadon, secretary of the seal sanctuary, said the pup was now doing well.

"She is very bright and we are 90 per cent certain she will make a full recovery."
