Bid to tackle county problem of childhood obesity with educational action plan
AN ACTION plan to prevent county children from becoming obese has been put together for the first time.
NHS Lincolnshire plans to tackle childhood obesity by educating parents, promoting breast-feeding and healthy lifestyles and managing pregnant women who are obese, among a raft of other recommendations.

It is the first time a county strategy has been devised to tackle childhood obesity, despite various national and local initiatives.
As part of the proposals, women will be better supported in antenatal and post-natal periods and a weight management programme for obese pregnant women will be created.
Two of the main points is to ensure women access obstetric care before 12-weeks gestation and women breastfeed until their baby is six months old.
Lincoln antenatal teacher Jules King said: "There is some evidence to suggest breast-fed babies are less likely to develop childhood obesity because they stop feeding when they choose to, whereas babies that are being fed from a bottle are more likely to over-feed.
"If you look at growth charts of babies in the first few months, formula-fed babies are more likely to put on weight in the first few weeks.
"Obese women are more likely to have problems in pregnancy, such as developing gestational diabetes, which is why this report might be addressing the 12-week obstetric care issue."
NHS Lincolnshire breast-feeding support worker Joleen Bromfield, 28, is supportive of the plans to promote it among mums.
She said: "Breast milk is designed for a baby, but formula milk is processed so it has a lot of fat in it that is processed. It can lead to babies putting on more weight.
"It would be great to have more support out there because that's the problem really and that's why we are trying to fill the gaps."
Research included in the report from the National Obesity team, which informed NHS Lincolnshire's proposals, says: "While parents acknowledge childhood obesity is a problem, they do not think of it as 'their' problem."
It goes on to say that parents underestimate the amount their children eat and get used to a host of unhealthy behaviours such as being sedentary and eating too big portions.
The report will now go to the children and young people scrutiny committee on Friday for feedback.
Councillor Mrs Patricia Bradwell, executive councillor for children's services, said: "We will be working closely with NHS Lincolnshire and partner organisations to tackle the year on year increase in childhood obesity. It is clear that a sustained team effort involving a range of agencies is the most effective way to succeed.
"Obesity will be targeted through direct early intervention during pregnancy, a child's early years and throughout their school years. This includes supporting mothers to effectively breastfeed and promoting active lifestyles and healthy food choices in the home, nursery and school."

Those people that feed their kids on crap and then just let them sit around watching TV or playing on the X-Box should be ashamed of themselves. They may be mothers and fathers - but they're not parents.
Kids will naturally want the sugary stuff - it gives them a taste 'hit' but, as MM said, a parent has to able to say 'NO' and mean it.”

“It's not so much educating the children that is needed, it's the parents who need a nutrition course and pamphlet/folder given to them at birth telling them what too feed their kids (and themselves for that matter) and guideline calorie intakes for different age ranges.
The simple way to look at food is, if it didn't have or come from something with a face or wasn't grown in the ground then chances are it is bad for you, and this should be relayed onto your children as well.
The best way to control a kids diet is to start off by not giving them the crap in the first place. A great example is a couple I'm friends with, they have a 5 year old daughter who despises cake, none fruit ice cream and sweets. Why? Because they never exposed her to them as a child. They said the best way to stop her eating junk was to never give her it in the first place, ie 'you never miss what you havn't had' and it works brilliantly. When she goes to partys she drinks water or fruit juice, wont drink pop or eat cake or sweets because she doesnt like them! And her favourite breakfast is steak and cucumber...
People nowadays have a very poor nutritional understanding, and there is no wonder we have an obesity problem in our country as people simply dont know what they are putting in their mouths.
People should look back to our cave man roots for the ideal diet. Foods like lean meats, fish, veg, sweet potatoes, nuts, fruit, natural cheese etc are what we were designed to eat. But instead we poison our bodys with processed grains like rice, pasta, breads and cereals thinking they are good for us because they are low in fat. WRONG! They are bad because they dont digest properly and are full of carbs, which turn to sugar and make you fat. And to compound the problem, we eat sweets, crisps biscuits and drink fruit juice and fizzy drinks in excess, giving us more sugar to add to the mountain of carbs we ate for our evening meal.
Want to be healthy and raise healthy children? Eat like we were designed to and get daily exercise. It doesn't cost much more, and is there really a price worth putting on your own or your childrens health?”

“This article makes me chuckle, as do alot of the comments, I am overweight, and much to all you fat people haters shock, I also have 2 children, so yes some mad bloke did do the deed!
The article makes me chuckle because I may be overweight but I'm also not stupid, if you overeat or overfeed your kids you and them will get fat, it aint rocket science is it. My kids are not overweight, one has a tendency to be bigger, but the other is like a lat, as was his dad in his teens.
It doesnt need money wasting on this sort of education because any parent who professes not to know why they kids are overweight is talking rubbish.
And as for all you fat hating people who go on about the unattractiveness etc of larger people, you obviously are the typical shallow type of person our society seems to be breeding these days, you never heard of personality, or do you lot have relationships purely with the outer shell of people, god how boring!!”

“i disagree that all 'fatties' breed fat children, im overweight and not proud of it,the way people stare and judge me, but my kids are not fatties they arent fat at all, i am strict about what treats they can have and when. i feel it is a vicious circle being overweight, people stare and i feel guilty for the way i am so i start comfort eating.”

“Slim Lover - it's a bit like when we use to be picked for teams in PE - lardy was always last. Well if only boys and girls did PE together, you'd get a glimpse of what you'd be left with in life unless you stopped faking a letter from Mummy to get out of PE.

“I think it would help if we paid these people an extra benefit added to their child allowance as long as they don't earn over 52k a year . The extra benifit could then be used for gym time ,visits to suchi shops rather than the local burger outlet.There is no worse sight than seeing a lady who has let her weight balloon pushing ayoung tyke in a buggy with greggs dandruff in the tykes hair. So come on all you people lets help these folk , not ridicule them as "fatties".”
