A myriad of quirky and collectible antiques are to go under the hammer at new year auctions in Lincoln.

A propeller which is thought to have survived one of the worst airship crashes in history will be up for sale at Unique Auctions in Whisby Road, Lincoln.

The 12ft-tall solid wood propeller, which powered the ill-fated Airship R101 is up for grabs at the New Year's Day sale.

It was one of four huge propellers used to power the British-made airship made in 1929 under the Imperial Airship Scheme.

It crashed in France on its maiden overseas voyage – killing 48 people.

It was one of four found by Lincoln man Clive Moles.

Auctioneer Terry Woodcock said: "This one had previously been hanging in a specialist museum before it came to us."

A set of Charlie Chaplin pictures on 8mm film and a signed picture of the Dambusters reunion at RAF Hemswell in 1999 are also hoped to attract specialist attention, along with another propeller from a Sopwith Camel aeroplane.

Mr Woodcock said: "This is one of the most interesting sales I have ever had."

Over at Thomas Mawer and Sons auctioneers in Portland Street, Lincoln, a giant collection of Snoopy memorabilia will go on sale on January 10.
