Dr Anthea Mowat, of Hundleby, has been rewarded by the BMA for her dedication to her career including her work at Pilgrim Hospital.
Dr Mowat said: "It is such a lovely surprise to be recognised for my service to the BMA in this way.
"It was a great honour to receive the medal."
The award was presented by Professor Sir Michael Marmot, the president of the BMA, at the 2010 BMA Annual Representatives Meeting in Brighton.
Anthea Mowat's membership of the BMA has spanned 27 years and in that time she has given loyal service to both local and national bodies.
She has served on the Hospital Junior Staff Committee early in her career and later on the Trent Regional Council and as chairman of the Holland Division, which she continues to do.
As chairman of the division, she played a leading role particularly at a time when the division was facing closure and has successfully ensured that the division remains active.
Nationally, she has made an enormous contribution to the work of the BMA Staff and Associate Specialist Committee, where she was an active member of the negotiating committee which delivered the new contract in 2008.
