Anglian Water customers face a £12 increase in water bills in 2013.

The average rise will be kept at 2.8 per cent - below the level of inflation - by the large numbers of customers switching to a water meter.

Martyn Oakley, Anglian Water's customer services director, said: "The real winners this year will be those customers who make the switch from an unmeasured bill to a water meter.

"For those already on a meter or who stick with bills tied to the old rateable value of their home, the rise will be about 4 per cent, although customers with a meter will see smaller rises than those without.

"This rise is mainly due to inflation, which was at 3 per cent when bills were calculated.

"The remaining 1 per cent is to help pay for Anglian Water's investment programme, which this year will be £466 million.

"That investment will allow us to maintain and improve our essential equipment above and below ground, support growth and recovery in these tough economic times, and protect our environment against the impacts of climate change."

Anglian Water plans to spend around £6 million on a new water treatment works near Louth.

“Insidestory your comments are well founded. What a terrible legacy that woman left for this country. The statue should be confined to the dustbin!”

“Rip off Britain strikes again and the least able to pay are going to suffer. And another way of Forcing (encouraging )people to change to water meters .
More competition is needed for all industry's that was once owned by the people of this once Great Country.
Thank you for nothing Maggie your legacy lives one.”

“Luckily a spokesman on the BBC Local News gave us a very good reason as to why there is to be this increase. A lot of people are moving into Lincolnshire which I thought a very good reason, well till I thought about it. If there's a lot of people moving here surely the water lot are going to be getting more money or if not are we who are here to start with going to be paying all their water bills for them. I may be wrong, but I was always under the impression that more customers meant more profit. Still if you consider that our forefathers paid to set the water lot up to start with only for them to be taken from us and sold to the few what are we to expect.”
