Ashley Westwood set to quit Lincoln City as Portsmouth prepare to swoop
Ashley Westwood could quit Lincoln City in fewer than 50 days at the club amid speculation he has been offered a coaching role at Portsmouth.
The Echo understands the League One side want to make the former Kettering boss part of their backroom staff ahead of the new season.

Westwood is understood to have informed Lincoln of their interest and Imps boss David Holdsworth has reluctantly agreed not to stand in the 35-year-old's way.
Although Westwood signed a one-year contract in May, Lincoln are believed to have asked for a pre-season friendly in compensation.

Although the club would benefit financially from that game, it has now forced Holdsworth back into the transfer market to recruit another central defender.
Currently he only has Andrew Boyce and Josh Gowling as recognised centre-backs and Holdsworth is eager to add strength in depth to a backline short on cover.
The former Mansfield boss will get the funds to replace Westwood should he leave, but it is likely he will want another experienced replacement.
With Holdsworth set to go into the season without an assistant manager because of a lack of funds, he wants somebody who can play as well as assist in coaching.
Westwood was a perfect fit for the Imps boss with the ex-Crewe defender having experienced management at Kettering.
But Portsmouth boss Michael Appleton, whose side are preparing for life in League One, wants him to assist Pompey's bid to rise back to the Championship.

“just wanted to add to mattyimp's comments and say that football is a team game, whereby you may not necessarily play your best eleven players, just play your best "Team"”

“It's always interesting resurrection to follow where former players go from the club, and like you I too wish him all the best for the future and thank him for his efforts over the last three seasons.”

“Lilyandbill......The reason Luton, Forest Green and Grimsby are signing the best talent up is because their wage budgets are far greater than Lincolns. Luton in particular have signed established players with proven ability in Jon Shaw, Scott Rendell and in particular Ronnie Henry who last season was a regular with Stevenage in lge 1, Those players will be on big wages and out of our current wage budgets grasp.
In Adam Smith we have a good player who is direct and pacey, just a shame we couldn't hold on to Lloyd we would of had two good wingers for the season. As regards to Lloyd I think the new housing and hotel arrangements may have played a role, he was car sharing with Robbie Williams and was regularly staying in hotels when over here, so maybe that could have been a factor as Lloyd is adamant his wage demands was not excessive.
Southport proved last year you do not need a team full of star names and ego's, you need 11 players working for each other and all pulling together.”

“See the inevitable has happened then and Joe Anyon has left for Shrewsbury.
Would have thought a good move for him and a big loss to us.
Upped his game massively last season and consistent throughout. Good luck to him”

“Vulcanimp you didn't answer my question , what would you do?
Regarding holding a players registration, as I said in my post earlier , the contract wouldn't have come into effect until 1st July and therefore it is my belief , that he was technically a free agent.”

“Personally I think he is to old for this league anyway, some of the younger fitter forewards would leave him standing. We need to be looking at the Lutons, Forest Greens and dare I say the Cods who now know what it takes to get out of this Micky Mouse league. They are signing young lads hungry to play league football and are snapping up the best talent from other teams in this division”
