De Aston School in Market Rasen gets 'outstanding' Ofsted report

The excellent behaviour of its pupils helped a West Lindsey secondary school win top marks from Government Ofsted inspectors.

De Aston School at Market Rasen was given an outstanding rating for achievement, behaviour and safety, and leadership, management and governance.

And the Willingham Road school – which still retains a state-run boarding house for pupils from all over the world – was graded "good" for teaching and learning.

Pupil Dominic Batey, 13, said: "It really is a very good school and perfect for me because I want to become a sports scientist. I play tennis three times a week at school and there's plenty of lunchtime clubs run by teachers."

School council members Jayne Milburn and Ellie Perry, both 14, praised De Aston's staff.

Jayne said: "The school community has a very nice atmosphere and there's always extra tuition for anyone who gets behind with their subjects."

Ellie said: "Teachers give so much support that they push students to step out of their comfort zones to get the higher marks in course work and exams."

De Aston head teacher Ellenor Beighton said: "The Ofsted report is something to be proud of as it recognises the sustained improvements the school has made.

"To have so many outstanding elements recognised is a major achievement – particularly under the tougher Ofsted framework which was introduced last year. However, we will not be resting on our laurels.

"The school will now continue its efforts to ensure that we are outstanding in all that we do, because that is what our students deserve."

Lead inspector Frank Knowles said: "Students show great enthusiasm for learning and make outstanding progress and achieve well above average results in GCSE and equivalent examinations at the end of Year 11," he said.

"De Aston sixth form students achieve well and are very successful in gaining entry to university, further education or employment.

"Behaviour is excellent and students show great courtesy and care for others. The positive and caring atmosphere of the school means that students feel safe.

"Another outstanding element of the school is its leadership and management. A high degree of rigour was brought by the head teacher – the school is very well led at all levels.

"The boarding house was also inspected and outcomes for boarders are outstanding.

"And the experience of boarding and the good quality of care makes an exceptionally positive impact on students' lives."
