Axe for free swimming is taking cuts too far
AS a senior silver voter, I am insulted that the Government has seen fit to withdraw free access for my grandchildren and me to go swimming at Yarborough Leisure Centre in Lincoln (June 26).
I have worked since my 15th birthday, I have been employed all my life and I am now tipping 60-plus.
The City of Lincoln Council issued a concession pass to myself and my grandchildren which allows us all to go swimming for free.
This I took to be a concession and an initiative to help me keep fit in my latter years, with the added benefit of taking my grandchildren with me.
Having said that, the swimming may be a concession, but I find I still spend an equal amount in the café following our swimming sessions.
But now, in the interest of economy and making cuts, the concession is to be withdrawn at the same time as the bus pass is to be reviewed. Well, we all know what a review means.
I foresee the tenancy that the ruling political party holds will be short, as the silver voters will remember when the concession is taken back.
It's the small things that are important and bring great joy.
Swimming is a very important thing we can share with our grandchildren.
I say to the politicians: Take a little now and you will lose a lot later. We can wait our chance to have our say at the polling booths.
Mr J. C. Raisen Ruskin Avenue, Lincoln.

“The free swimming was just a pre election bribe that was never funded properly in the first place. If you want to swim for free try Skeg or the Trent, even the Brayford Pool. Or you could just pay like the rest of us. Free travel, fuel money a pension and you could always get a job By the time I retire we will be working well into our 70's so stop gippin on.”

“I'm unable to take advantage of free swimming, and don't believe there's anything such as 'a free lunch'. Get your wallet out and pay like the rest of us have to.”

“Agree with Marten on this one. I enjoy a number of things but have yet to see them offered for free, in fact the costs rise. Consider it nice that you had free swimming for a time.”

“Sorry, but there are FAR more important services that need funding ahead of a freebie. Times are hard, belts need tightening and luxuries have to go first. Personally, I think you'd do well to thank your lucky stars that you enjoyed free swimming at all.”
