One of the UK's best-known political figures says he hopes more people will support wind farms.

Veteran Labour politician Tony Benn, the Secretary of State for Energy in the late 1970s, said: "I think wind farms have an important role to play in renewable energy.

"But if they are creating a disturbance I think people should have the right to stop them in their area.

"However, I would hope that people did support wind farms because they're much safer than nuclear energy and cause less disruption than coal."
