A bevy of beauties are set to battle it out for the right to be crowned Miss Lincoln 2009.

The lovely lasses made it through to the final after a day of auditions last week saw more than 50 entrants whittled down to only 20.

The contest was open to single, 17 to 24-year-old women without children who live, work or study in Lincolnshire, with the winner going on to represent the county at the Miss England semi-finals in June.

Lucy Heath (18), from Broughton, is taking part for the second year in a row, after winning the public text vote in the 2008 contest.

"I'm really happy to have made the final because I want to win," she said.

"I'd like to represent Lincoln and do charity work to raise the profile of Miss Lincoln."

Organiser Graham Would said he thought some of the girls have the potential to go all the way and take the national title.

"There are three or four who would make a great Miss England and I hope one of them will go through from the Miss England semi final," he said.

Tickets for the awards dinner, at the Holiday Inn in Lincoln on May 19, are available at a cost of £29 per person by calling Graham Would on (01636) 659459 or e-mailing grahamwould@ntlworld.com

To vote just text the contestant's name to 84205. If voting for Romy Sullivan add a 2 to the end of her name as she has entered a competition elsewhere in the country. Texts cost 60p.

“I have been a finalist in the competition in the past and I resent the stigma attached to beauty contests in that all the entrants must therefore be egotistical, dimwitted airheads. Not true at all.

Lincoln is a small place, a competition like this allows girls to enter and do something positive and self-esteem boosting. And why shouldn't they? Infact Lynn I suggest you have a look at other entrants profiles on the Miss England site and I think you'll find the majority have a high standard of education and most do come across as good examples to represent their county with good morals and ambitions. The opportunity to take up this position also allows the girls a platform in which they can raise awareness for charities and causes they believe in, not just a step into the modelling world.

You are of course entitled to your opinion but prehaps you need to readjust your insults.”

“Right... so someone entering a contest that tests their mental agility is to be admired, whereas someone entering a contest that tests their physical appearance is just a raging egomaniac. Okaaaaaay.”

“Sneer - Click on entertainment and go to the story headlined 'Physique'. I posted a comment on April 17th. I admire these contestants for their mental agility. Look at Carol Vorderman she's got brains and beauty.”

“So do you feel the same way about, let's say, Countdown contestants with their 'Ooh look at me, aren't I great at anagrams?' attitudes then?”

“I don't have a bitter bone in my body, I just don't like these 'I am the great, I am' , type shows. But each to their own. I would be of the same opinion if it were muscle-bound men”

“They must think they're something special to put themselves through this ordeal. Big egos, or what, it's the modest ones who are the winners every time.”
