A father who killed four of his children in a car crash could see his jail term increased after the Government appealed against his sentence.

Nigel Gresham could see his sentence raised to a maximum of 14 years after the Solicitor General asked the Court of Appeal to reconsider his two-year sentence because it is "unduly lenient".

Gresham (37) was convicted of causing death by dangerous driving at Lincoln Crown Court last month after four of his children were killed when his Land Rover plunged into a river.

Willow (two), Angel (four), Thor (six) and Keavy (eight) all died when the off-road vehicle veered into the River Witham.

Nigel Gresham was at the wheel of the vehicle carrying his then-partner Sara Bolland and their seven children when it slewed across a country road and into the river.

He made a series of dangerously inept modifications to transform his 4x4 into an off-road vehicle.

Judge Michael Heath told him last month: "I find it hard to understand how you could place the lives of your partner and seven children in grave danger by allowing them to travel in such a vehicle."

Sergeant Dave Kay, the policeman who led the investigation into the crash, welcomed the move.

But he said police had ruled out an appeal to allow those involved with the case to "move forward".

The Attorney General's Office can only refer cases where the original sentence is considered significantly lower than that which the judge could reasonably have imposed.
