THE widow of a Lincoln soldier killed in Afghanistan is to be presented with a medal from the Ministry of Defence.

Kerry Shepherd, who lost her husband Captain Dan Shepherd last year, is to be awarded the Elizabeth Cross.

The medal will be presented during a ceremony to be held at the Princess Royal Barracks in Surrey today.

The medal honours the dedication shown by families who have lost a loved one in operations.

It will be presented to Mrs Shepherd by the Royal Logistic Corps. His parents will also attend the ceremony.

The bomb disposal expert was killed by an insurgent's homemade device in July last year while serving as part of the Joint Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group.

The Echo previously reported how brave Capt Shepherd, 28, was posthumously awarded the George Medal.

That honour is to be presented at Buckingham Palace in London later this year.
