Book honours Bomber Command heroes
Men from bomber units in Lincolnshire have been remembered in a book dedicated to their squadrons.
The book, called Heroes of RAF Bomber Command in Lincolnshire, was released last week and is an updated edition of a title by the same name written 18 months ago.
This 192-page edition includes better maps to illustrate routes flown and more detailed descriptions of events surrounding flights over enemy lines.
Author and historian Rupert Matthews was inspired to write about the men behind the missions after his father served in Bomber Command during the Second World War.
Mr Matthews, who has written more than 160 books in his 25-year career as an author, said it was a great honour to tell the tale of fighter squadrons.
"I had written a book about the technical side of Bomber Command several years ago, but I wanted to really delve into the people that made these things happen," said Mr Matthews, who now lives in Surrey after moving from Lincolnshire a few years ago.
"I have tried to include every squadron that operated out of the county during the war, especially the major ones; the Dambusters have a entire chapter to themselves.
"It's important to tell the story of all the men and women involved in fighting for our country because of the freedom they afforded us."
Former prisoner of war and author Douglas Hudson, 94, said: "I would support anything that would help create awareness about Bomber Command."
