EAGER young bookworms across the county are celebrating World Book Day today.

And to mark the occasion, Mount Street Infant And Nursery School in Lincoln has opened its new library.

To celebrate its 90th anniversary, the school set out to stock its new library with enough good-quality books to launch a weekly book-loaning system for pupils.

The system, which launches today, allows children to choose a book to take home for their own enjoyment, in addition to the books they are given as part of the normal reading programme.

More than 300 books have been donated by parents, local residents and members of the website Freecycle.

But the school is still looking for good-quality factual, fiction and picture books for its pupils – who range in age from 3 to 7.

Deputy head teacher, Marie-Claire Bretherton, said: "We have been overwhelmed by the support of our parents and the local community.

"Libraries are an important building block of literacy and the children now have access to a fun and inspiring place packed with colourful and interesting books."

Caroline Killeavy, whose daughter attends the school, has volunteered to help staff the library and has been collecting book donations for the past several weeks.

She told the Echo: "I read with my little girl at home and have done since she was a tiny baby. It's a time for parents to bond with their children.

"Books have taught her how to use her imagination and helped her to become more creative."

Olwalana Ojetayo, 5, said: "I'm really looking forward to the library opening so I can read more books at home."

To donate books to the school, call Mrs Killeavy on 07710 175504.
