DAVID Newton says he would prefer a manager with non-league experience to succeed Jason Lee at Boston United.

The Pilgrims chairman believes knowledge of players is vital to turning around the club's fortunes after slipping to 12th in the table.

Asked if he would like a manager with experience of Blue Square Bet North or the league below, Newton replied: "It would be nice. Knowledge of players is absolutely key.

"You've got to get out there and do the hard work and watch games.

"It's a difficult one because you either interview people who have no experience, are failed managers or someone with a bit of success.

"It's our job to sift through that and think who is the best person to take us forward."

Newton said reaching the play-offs will remain the target for the new manager.

"The aim at the start of the season was the play-offs and that's still the aim," said Newton.

"There's no reason why we can't do it, although it's not going to be an easy task.

"We just need to see some progression.

"The decision (to sack Lee) wasn't just about the last few results, it's about two years of not really moving forward.

"It was a considered decision, although it was a difficult decision.

"We can't not look at the gates as well. I imagine, when Jason took over, they were about 1,400, now they're half that."
