DAVID Newton has taken a swipe at old foe John Fenty after accusing the Grimsby Town chairman of blocking new financial fair play rules.

The Football Conference have attempted to bring in a rule forbidding directors putting loans into clubs.

The plan was supported by Boston United chairman Newton, who says clubs and players need to "get in the real world" to counteract the recession, which is making life increasingly difficult for non-league sides.

However, Mariners chief John Fenty, who controversially plucked managers Rob Scott and Paul Hurst from United last year, was among the chairmen to block the new rules.

"What we're trying to do is build a sustainable football club, not the rubbish we inherited five years ago with debts of £3million," said Newton, reflecting on when he saved the Pilgrims from closure in 2007.

"What is that about? That is not what football should be about.

"We have lobbied the Conference for new rules where directors can't put loans in anymore.

"But Mr Fenty scuppered the vote because he wants to continue pouring money into a football club that's not sustainable.

"Football has got to come back into reality. Players have to get into the real world, too.

"The rest of us are (in the real world) because we're living in tough times."

“You'll have to forgive Dailywoman, she has nothing better to do than troll this website now that the sport grimsby website is as dead as GTFC itself will be when Fenty pulls the plug next May.”

“Sorry Dailyman. . . . absolute nonsense its obvious you and perhaps John Fenty are out of touch with what's been happening in the professional game of late. Now I've not been ableto track down a report about the Conference vote, but in April this year Championship Football League clubs voted in favour of Financial Fair Play rules to ensure clubs become financially self sufficient. Joining Division 1 & 2 clubs, meaning all 72 League clubs have agreed a concerted effort in controlling their financial destinies. And we have all read much recently of SPL approach to Fair Play financial operartion. So sour grapes at Boston? No just a realistic, professiona,l forward thinking chairman. Eventually those stuck in the past will have to face reality too including The Mariners”

“Sour grapes Mr Newton, sour grapes. Very lame swipe at a far superior football club who gave your ex managers something you weren't prepared to give - a contract and a future. You continue managing poxy oston United who will be non existent in 10 years and leave the big clubs out of it fool.”

“Football needs more chairmen with David Newton's common sense business approach to the game.”
