GOALKEEPER Ricky Drury hopes he has done enough to keep his place in the Boston United team despite Saturday's defeat to Altrincham.

Drury played against Alty after manager Jason Lee axed first-choice stopper Dan Haystead.

Although his first start of the season did not go according to plan, Drury was not at fault for any of the visitors' three goals and believes he has put himself in contention for more starts.

"I found out I was playing at training on Thursday," explained Drury, who made a couple of appearances at the end of last season.

"I was delighted and couldn't wait to take my chance.

"It was a little bit of a surprise. Dan has played every game this season, but you never know when that chance will come.

"Dan took it well. We're good friends and we support each other.

"I've supported him throughout pre-season and the season so far.

"He did the same for me. He came out and did the warm-up and gave me some advice. He was great.

"I thought I did okay during the game. I couldn't really do a lot about the goals.

"It's disappointing because, other than that, I didn't have a save to make.

"I'd love to play again. I didn't really make a mistake, but we'll have to see what happens."

Lee believes his decision to play Drury was vindicated.

"Ricky wasn't at fault for any of the goals and he did well enough," said the Pilgrims boss.

"Dan has made some mistakes this season and my thinking was: it's time for Ricky to have an opportunity."
