HAVING a tumour on his lung may have led to a Boston man committing suicide, an inquest has heard.

William Reilly, 77, was found hanged at his home in Carlton Road, Boston on October 4.

At the inquest into his death, Professor Robert Forrest, the coroner for south Lincolnshire said that the post mortem examination had found a five-centimetre tumour on his lung.

His doctor, Dr Nolan at Liquorpond Street Surgery, was not aware of the tumour but Prof Forrest said: "I do not know if William knew about the tumour and made a logical decision.

"He was also moving and the stress of moving also needs to be taken in to account.

"It is purely speculative but Mr Reilly may have seen another doctor about this and may have been aware of the tumour."

Mr Reilly was also found to have alcohol in his system at the time of death. A toxicology report showed that the retired labourer had 108 millilitres of alcohol in his blood per 100 ml of blood – the legal drink driving limit is 80 millilitres per 100 ml of blood.

Professor Forrest suggested that Mr Reilly's hanging may have been the result of knowing about the tumour.

Speaking at the inquest held at Spalding Magistrates Court, he said: "Mr Reilly's mother had died from cancer and he had said there was no need to go through all of that and there was always a way to die with dignity.

"It may be possible that he did it as a result of knowing he had lung cancer lung cancer which was not known to his practitioner."

Prof Forrest recorded a verdict of suicide.
