He said: “Like many on the South Shore we lost our home and cars during Sandy, we really want to try and be back in time for Christmas but we can't do it alone as we are having to now take extended time away from work to co-ordinate everything.

“It's going to cost us close to 150,000 dollars to repair everything that happened, please help us if you can even just a couple of bucks will help us out during this time.”

The couple claim that their insurance company has said they do not qualify for the hurricane surge cover and as they have no other form of flood insurance, they could up paying for the cost of the damage themselves.

Mr McEwing added: “We took on over one foot of water inside the house and lost the entire lower level of rooms – the den, laundry room, boiler room, office and Florida room.

“The boiler and hot water heater were destroyed, not to mention that the salt water got into the circuit box and electrical circuits and will likely mean that the house will require a rewire.”

The outside of the house was also damaged and will require new waterproofing, insulation and siding. On top of all this they also lost both of their cars to the storm.

“Did he not realise when he moved to the US that 50% of the country do not believe the State should provide any health care or welfare for its most disadvantaged citizens? Why would he expect those same people to chip in "just a couple of bucks" to return him to his beachfront lifestyle?

Someone who "works in IT" should have been able to use Google to find out something about a country he planned to make his home.”

“I am sorry that they have suffered, but that is all they will get from me.

They were happy to leave this country for the bright lights, better standard of living and higher salary in the US. At least they have the means in which to pick themselves up with (he still has a job). Maybe he should have checked the small print of his insurance as storm surges are a known risk on Long Island.

It is a tragic thing to have happened to them, but why should we in the 'old country' be bothered unless we are family?”

“I for one will not donate money to help this gentleman, repair his "DEN" and "FLORIDA ROOM" whatever that is?

He should have got his priorities right and made sure he had adequate insurance cover.

I just hope this doesn't open the flood gates for more begging stories!”
