The Lincolnshire MP embroiled in a row over expenses claimed for his moat has announced his resignation.

The Sleaford and North Hykeham MP has announced that he will stand down at the next election and apologised for the "collective and personal" failure over expenses.

Tory Mr Hogg has represented his Lincolnshire constituency for 30 years.

Last week the Daily Telegraph revealed that he had claimed £2,000 of taxpayers' money to have the moat cleaned at his home, as well as £14,000 a year for a "lady" to look after the property.

He has since paid back the £2,000.

In his resignation statement he said: "I understand the public anger that has erupted over expenses. The current system is deeply flawed; we parliamentarians have got it wrong and I apologise for that failure which is both collective and personal.

"David Cameron has called for an early election. I agree with him. We need a new Prime Minister, a new government and a refreshed parliament."

For more on the resignation, see Wednesday's Echo.

    “Someone mentioned thatcher.
I've always wondered how a grocers' daughter from a small backwater in the east of england could become wealthy - now it's obvious!
See you for the party in traf sq the saturday after she dies!”

“The Tories were also bad at sleeze look at the Westland affair of the 90's. Blaming someone who left office 20 years ago is a little odd! You saying that in the past 20 years we have been unable to change things. In fact the changes to the tax implication of tax-payer funded mortgages to make the more lucrative to MP's was made by a chanceller Gordon Brown. ie he is directly responsible for some of these problems.”

    “Adrian is right.

Mrs Thatcher made this country great again by clearing up the mess of the 75 -79 Labour Government.

Just like DC is going to have to clear up an even bigger mess left by the current lot!”

“The main political parties have been caught out at last in using hard earned tax payers money. They are just as bad as the bankers who have paid themselves millions using a crooked system and wanting more in bailing their banks out for more tax payers money and in the meantime claiming bonuses, and expenses for their children to have private education.
Nu Labour are a mess. Cameron's Tories are just as bad. Followed by the Lib Dems with so many MPs from all the three main parties fleecing the public purse.
All we see is public apologies and excuses and yet ordinary folk are prosecuted to the extent of the law.
It has become one law for the rich and another law for us poor folk.
Get rid of those MPs once and for all.
Lets have a general election now.
I hope the Daily Telegraph will expose the crooks posing as MEPs at Brussels who are doing likewise on the gravy train.
So Mr Hogg, you and other MPs have been caught out, and about time too. You are one of those multi millionaires and like with others, want more. You have a luxuary lifestyle which other people cannot afford.
Yes, Margaret Thatcher started the era of greediness. She started the ball rolling of the "dog eat dog" syndrome. She created the shortgage of council houses for those on the waiting list and now sons and daughters are still awaiting affordable housing.
What a shambles and chaos things have become.
Politicans - you have been weighed in the balance and found wanting!”

“As a general point it might be worth the admin bods in Parli
ament looking at the way Local Govt. handles expenses and deals with wrongdoers, several have ended up in prison! What have the scrutineers been doing?
Perhaps there should be Regional or Constituency groups set up to look at expenses submitted. This could be made up of an Auditor, Accountant, Constituency members of all parties and totally randomly picked individuals serving a bit like a Jury system. All voluntary, the remuneration being for travel, a bit of admin and the knowledge that an Honourable Duty was being carried out for the benefit of ones Community.”

“We are very sorry to read that Douglas Hogg has resigned. He has helped us personally on a couple of occasions, for which we were very grateful.
He has been a very hardworking and unsung MP for Lincolnshire for many years. It is a pity he has become embroiled in this 'Expenses Fiasco'. I think others were probably more at fault and there is a danger that people like himself and Mr Speaker may become scapegoats for the real culprits.
After all this all started after Blair got in and encouraged people to be 'Aspirational', (ie GREEDY), at the same time patronisingly saying he was 'going to be different' he ceratinly was, like to see his and Mrs B's expenses!!!
re Douglas Hogg's stately home - if the upkeep is expensive he may have to donate it to the National Trust and we could all end up paying much more - but looking at his pad it would probably be worth saving for the Nation!.
We wish him every good luck!”

“To David of Lincoln, please explain how Thatcherism got us into this mess. This was unheard of in the Thatcher era and has occurred under a morally corrupt left wing Labour government. I'd like to know how a far left liberal party like the Liberal Democrats can get us out of this mess, especially when its own leader and MPs have been caught up in this scandal.

If far left liberals are so saintly in their conduct, I will point readers to the sordid actions of their MP Mark Oaten. Such disgusting behaviour demonstrates the nature of the liberal left.”

“Douglas Hogg maybe gone but unless we have a radically new MP we will have more of the same. Neither Darling or Osborne is the man to run the Treasury and both Cameron and Brown lack a real vision for the country. Thatcherism got us into this mess and we need a real liberal thinking democratic Party to get us out of it.”

“Surely all these greedy MP's should be subject to a police investigation, all have obtained cash or goods by deception. I cannot understand why the Commissioner of the Met Police has to arrange a meeting with the Crown Prosecution Service to decide whether or not there should be a criminal investigation. The problem is that both these high ranking individuals are frightened of the Labour Government, this is totally wrong, Ministers are not beyond the law and they should be made to pay the penalties which we ordinary citizens have to pay if we commit a crime.”

“Getting news hot of the press that this could be part of the start of a David Cameron sleaze clear out.”
