Breaking news: Bridge drama brings traffic chaos
Traffic was brought to a standstill today when a man threatened to throw himself off a footbridge in the centre of Lincoln.
The man, dressed all in black, positioned himself in the centre of the bridge over Broadgate at around 4.30pm on Monday.
Police closed the road at both ends while negotiators talked to him.
Vehicles heading south were diverted down Monks Road, while those trying to head north were diverted past the Siemens building.
Other routes throughout the city ground to a halt as traffic built up, affecting thousands of rush hour drivers.
The man was led away from the footbridge at 5.50pm and the road was reopened.

“He may have an unbearable life and yes he should be shown compassion, but to endanger the lives of others is purely wrong in its own right. People may have needed to urgently get to the hospital in ambulances or otherwise. Fire Engines and Police cars could have needed to get past.
It would have been truely horrendous if he'd have jumped infront of or onto someones car, he may have ended up killing or seriusoly injuring innocent people on their way home.”

“This was infantile attention seeking by some pathetic brat -and nothing more. Instead of bringing an entire city to a standstill why couldn't he have done what every other overwrought adolescent (or overgrown adolescent) does i.e. paint his bedroom walls black, put a Smiths CD on and write some teen angst poetry?”

“I too was stuck in traffic and it was a nightmare. I was furious as I had a lot to do when I got in. However, when I found out why the road had been closed I only hoped the guy got the help he needed. I think it's a poor reflection on the cold, heartless society that we live in to read all these comments. Noone cares about anyone but themselves. It's no wonder the country is going to the dogs. I can't wait for your hour of need.”

“I was delayed for over an hour by the congestion. So what.
The life of one person who is desperately seeking help is worth far more than the combined inconvenience caused to all of us”

“The way the police controlled the traffic was very poor. I was in Broadgate car park & was directed to Monks Rd & then forced to go up Lindum Hill rather than along Clasketgate & then Tritton Road. This foolish decision was unnecessary & caused more congestion. Everytime there is any incident in Lincoln there is traffic gridlock caused by the Police closing entire roads. Surely their job is to get traffic moving not holding them up? What would happen in a "real" serious incident.
If Lincoln City Football Club are going to have to pay police for policing outside the stadium surely this guy should pay for the costs of policing, & Ritzy's nightclub should pay for all of the police outside their premises every weekend, while they should all their drunk customers more alcohol( I thought it is illegal to serve alcohol to a drunk.) Maybe everyone who calls the emergency services should be charged for the callout, despite already paying their taxes.”
