A COASTAL council has agreed to ring-fence its beach management budget.

Chapel St Leonards parish council's beach management committee was allocated a budget of £1,500 in 2012/13 but to date, just £970 has been spent.

For 2013/14, the budget has been increased to £2,000 and the committee has requested that its budget is ring-fenced so any surplus rolls over into the next year, in the same way as the cemetery, Christmas lights and CCTV committee budgets do.

Councillor Kevin Sharp, said: "I don't think it's right to keep ring-fencing public money. The cemetery committee I can understand, but in my opinion, if this is done in the budget they should spend all or close to that limit on what they want to do on the beach. If they can't find things to do it should go back into reserves."

Despite Cllr Sharp's concerns, the proposal was approved subject to the finance committee considering whether or not to cap the amount to be rolled over.
