I assume you may be joking but you may be certainly ignorant to our job, as is my wife who has said the same, so here is a brief insight, Fridge haulers
We are controlled by the big supermarket chains.
We have deadlines or fines, orders do not come in until the last minute, so if the say distribution centre is 3 hrs 45 min away they we will not normally let us leave until the earliest is 3 hrs 50 min, so five min for tea, no way, take it with you, Then we have yes may be a 2 or 3 hr wait for unloading, if it is what the supermarket decide on the day, or it could be 45 mins to 1 hr turn around, then we have collections on the way back, often up to 5 or 6, and we load them once the goods are are placed on the truck, and with a pallet truck we will manually place and store them in our trailer, as we will collect from local farms and other suppliers, who do not have modern loading docks,
Re your really cheap stores, we have to unload, stack and wait for it to be checked ourselves, often these are on euro pallets 2/3rd the normal size, (normal 26 pallets per trailer, euro up to 40) so there are more, and we can only move one at a time, so allot of walking, the supermarket do not care about us only profits.
Our seating is to drive as you agree, we have to think all the time, of you as a biker, other drivers, plan well ahead our driving, recall to memory our destinations, procedures, and if one has one follow a sat nave, move our arms, move our legs, and pick our noses.
You try sitting all day, and recall your route from Lincoln to Bristol where you will go if there is a accident, land marks and also what your return journey will be, bet you do not make it to Pennels mate.
And yes there are idiot HGV drivers, and yes the use the phone brew up ect ect ect, VOSA will get them one day, most of us work hard for little pay, we may do a 70hr week, 15 hr days paid as little as £7,5 per hour no overtime or weekend rate. So 70 hours for £525. Less deductions is about take home of £ 450. For 70 hrs and no time with your family because your too tired and must rest so you can be back to work after a 24 hr rest or 45 hrs rest because the super markets want their produce and the hauliers are under constant pressure to deliver your goods to the shelve.
That's the easy and simply version of our job, doing it is not my friend !!!”

Driving an HGV is no easy way to earn a living. Truck drivers are required to sit down all day at a cafe on the A1 before sitting behind the wheel for an hour or two to make some phone calls. Tough stuff VictorToo, far tougher than anything we could concieve...”
