CITY centre commuters will face traffic nightmares this week following the closure of one of the Lincoln's main arteries.

The section of High Street between Portland Street and the traffic light junction at Tentercroft Street will be closed until Thursday or Friday after a burst water main meant the road had to be excavated.

The closure in both directions is so that a large patch of carriageway on the southbound side of the road can be rebuilt after the pipe work suffered a burst on Sunday night. Workers were forced to dig up the road in the early hours of yesterday..

Sara Rowland, spokesman for Anglian Water said: "The repair work for the pipe has caused a lot of consequential damage.

"A 10in section of water main was discovered to have burst after our systems picked up increased water flow out of the local treatment works. Police then called saying the carriageway was breaking up, forcing workers to excavate the road.

"The work is expected to take until Thursday or possibly Friday. We apologise for any problems people might experience."

“Nick said "It may not have been so bad if two roads closed by the council years ago, were still open"

Which 2 roads are you referring to?”

“should have realised earlier why it took me an extra half an hour to get home tonight. People do get their underwear in a twist when there is a traffic jam i love it just sit back relax and listen to your music pure bliss”

“I have asked traffic officers to put up diversion signs to Newark.
People can shop there without any restrictions.
This is what Lincoln is renown for - traffic congestion.
    Not to mention parking.
It is noticeable that industry is moving out of Lincoln because the city has nothing else to offer except housing development and no infrastructure which is lacking for the city to survive.
    But then, who cares anymore!”

“Sooner the better this section of road is re-opened asap, due to the back log of traffic all around the city at peak times. It may not have been so bad if two roads closed by the council years ago, were still open. So the idea of keeping this section closed is ridiculous.”

“I agree kev, block it permanently and put up a couple of bridges over the railway or better still build a tunnel which could be connected to the existing one under ropewalk,.it would make the area much nicer.”

“What was really notable about this was actually how little traffic it caused, which bodes well for any future plans to extend the pedestrianised area.

I wonder if anyone in the Council had the nouse to send some traffic surveyors down there to look at the effect for themselves? Seems like a fantastic opportunity to experiment to me. Leave it shut!”
