A CHIP pan left unattended sparked a fire that saw a busy Lincoln road closed off.

The blaze broke out in a ground floor flat in Monks Road at about 4.50pm yesterday. Firefighters were called to the scene of the blaze, which was quickly brought under control.

Police blocked off the road from the bottom of Lindum Road to just past Lincoln College.

Owner of the property Bijan Keshmiri, who lives in Uphill, said: "The occupant put the chip pan on, went upstairs and forgot about it. I don't know what the damage is, but I think it's mainly smoke damage."

The occupant was alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm and taken to Lincoln County Hospital to be checked over.

Station manager at Lincoln South, Martin Grey, said: "We do not want any chip pans out there at all.

"They are lethal and still causing lots of fire deaths in the country."

“The one that was taken to hospital was a grey haired old geezer. He didn't even warrant an ambulance. He was taken in the fast responder paramedics vehicle. As for students being in the place, they wouldn't be desperate enough to live in this particular landlords properties. I live closeby and the main qualifications to get into his places seem to be either high as a kite, drunk as a skunk or just general lowlife. If the place had burnt down it would have been a big improvement.”

“Oven chips are all dry, you could always go to the chippy. Deep fat fryers are a good investment if you like fried food. This article highlights the dangers of leaving pans unattended.
My 80 year old father put a pan on the cooker, then decided to do a lap round the block on his mobility racing buggy. When he returned a fire engine was in attendance, his neighbours in the sheltered housing complex were not amused to have been herded into the communal dining area for three hours, until the 'all clear' was sounded.”

“I am not a student but live with students and i do not see the relevance that this was a student! you cannot blame every mistake that happens on a student!!! I know alot of students and do not no one that owns a chip pan!! this was obviously a mistake that alot of people make!”

“Anon you are talking absolute rubbish, chip pans are probably the biggest cause of kitchen fires, and this is a well known fact. The purchase of a small or suitably sized thermo controlled Deep Fay Fryer would prevent most if not all of these types of fires and save lives also.”

“Trust a firemen to make a comment like that,I and the majority of people have used chip pans for donkeys years without setting fire to ourselves, even if your pan catches on fire thats all that will be on fire.Unless theres a convenient curtain or something nearby to spread it its unlikely to set your kitchen alight,If firemen had their way we'd still live in the stone age before they invented matches........”
