A SMASH between a HGV and a van caused huge tailbacks after one lane of a main commuter road into Lincoln was closed.

Emergency services were called to the scene just past the Burton Waters roundabout on the A57 heading out of Lincoln at 2pm yesterday.

The DAF articulated lorry and Mercedes Sprinter van were blocking the main carriageway, forcing motorists to take diversions through nearby villages.

No-one was reported to have serious injuries and both drivers were treated on scene by paramedics.

Lincolnshire Police said the accident caused a large backlog of traffic from the Carholme Road roundabout towards Saxilby.

Motorists were advised to take alternative routes rather than add to the traffic in the area.

Spokesman for Lincolnshire Police Debra Tinsley confirmed the traffic was freely flowing from 3.20pm onwards.
