Cancer victim Jules King shortlisted for national award

A mother-of-two who died from bowel cancer has been shortlisted for a national award.

Inspirational Jules King, who worked with hundreds of families across Lincolnshire during her career as an antenatal teacher, died at St Barnabas Hospice on Saturday, March 31.

Now, Jules is in the running to scoop an award, presented by the National Childbirth Trust, which recognises her service to couples in the county.

A number of other volunteers in the East Midlands have been rewarded for their dedication to working with local parents.

The East Midlands winners from each category will go on to form the shortlist for the UK-wide NCT Stars Awards, along with winners from other regions.

The national awards will be presented at the House of Lords on Wednesday, October 31.

Mike Gale, head of volunteering at NCT, said: "All our volunteers make a difference to NCT's work, helping us to support more parents than ever.

"The NCT Awards are a wonderful opportunity for us to thank them and celebrate some of their greatest achievements."

Jules, who lived in Dunholme, left husband Andy and two sons Alex, 16, and Harry, 14.

She spent her last days promoting charity work for St Barnabas after being diagnosed with the terminal illness on January 25.

Jules renewed her wedding vows with Andy at Lincoln Cathedral earlier this year.

Speaking to the Echo in April, Andy said: "Jules was an absolute inspiration to each and every one of us. She was an incredible woman and it's no wonder I proposed to her within three weeks of us meeting."

He added: "She died as she wanted in the end – by making sure me and the kids do as much fundraising for St Barnabas Hospice as possible."
