A cat has been strangled with a mobile phone charger and the socket shoved down his throat in an horrific case of animal cruelty in Newark.

The dead Bengal cat was found by a member of the public with the car charger wrapped around his neck and had been dumped inside a plastic bag which was then placed inside a blue carrier bag.

The RSPCA was informed and an inspector attended. The cat's body was taken to a vet for a provisional post mortem examination.

Tests showed that the most likely cause of death for the cat was strangulation.  He had bruising on his neck and blood was found in his lungs.

The cat also had bruising inside his mouth and his teeth had been broken as a result of the socket being shoved inside.

The owner of the cat has been traced and informed of the cat's death.  The discovery was made on January 11 in a walkway at Beacon Hill, Newark.

RSPCA inspector Ian Callingham, who is investigating the incident, said: "This is just an awful case of animal cruelty and it is sickening to think of how much a painful death this cat would have died.

"It is very bizarre and it is strange that someone would then just dump the body in a busy area.

"I would appeal to anyone who may have any information in regards this incident to call me immediately on the RSPCA inspector appeal line on 0300 123 8018."
