Chris Sutton said Lincoln City delivered a performance which would have made Keith Alexander proud after a 3-1 victory against Hereford eased the Imps' relegation fears.

On a poignant night when the club paid a fantastic tribute to the Sincil Bank legend, who died 10 days ago, Lincoln produced a display befitting of their former leader.

Not even the visit of the World Cup could distract Sutton's side, who powered into a two-goal lead thanks to a Davide Somma strike and Matt Saunders' 30-yard howitzer.

Marc Pugh did pull a goal back for the Bulls, but Saunders made sure of victory with a side-foot finish as City moved 11 points clear of the League Two dropzone.

And Sutton said that Lincoln's performance, in front of more than 6,000 supporters, would have delighted Alexander, whose funeral is at Lincoln Cathedral on Monday.

"It was an emotional night," said the City chief. "The supporters turned out in their numbers and we are grateful for that because Keith did a fantastic job for this football club.

"With the position this club is in at the minute I think it shows just how much he should be appreciated for what he did. We would not mind swapping our position for the one the club had when he was here.

"But I think Keith would have been proud of our performance."

“Thank you JV - the screened tribute you compiled and the programme content for Keith was spot on and it was good to see so many staying on to see the screening the second time round at the end of the match. Shame the World Cup promoters failed to deliver what they promised - am sure the Board and Staff at the Bank feel let down.”

“A fantastic tribute to Big Keith. Good game and 3 points. Shame that the world cup was such a big let down and waste of time. The only good thing that came from it being there was the big screen. RIP Keith”

“What a great send off from the Bank for BIG KA. What a great disappointment for many youngsters, and people who came to the bank to see the World Cup, that it had to be kept hidden away from the many people who wanted to see it. A billed once in a lifetime opportunity was a complete shambles, leaving many upset that the cup was not, as promised, paraded aroung the pitch at half time. Personally, I thought it only took the limelight away from the tribute to KA and a very good game of football. My grandson went away complaining that he did not see the cup, despite the big build up. Very poor indeed.”

“Last night was a very emotional night, seeing images of Keith and our play-offs left tears in my eyes. Well done to the club for doing a fantastic tribute to Keith Alexander. When clips of Keith came on the big screen it was really nice to see everyone in the stadium started clapping and when club chaplain Andrew vaughan spoke about Keith you could feel his sadness in his voice. I think the club got it spot on last night so well done to them for the effort they put in to show Keith what a legend he was at Lincoln city FC.”

“Last night was out of this world, just like the trip to Millennium in 2003. Couldnt see a person near me without a tear in their eye. Keith would have been so proud of everyone associated with the club last night, truely exceptional. The programme was also fantastic with the amazing comments from other managers about Keith, it just shows you how much Keith has done for Football as a whole.
The lads did everyone proud, Scott did fantastic to hold the lads together and played brilliantly.
Bring on Tuesday night, and lets hope some that turned out last night will be there for the last few home games of the season and finish with a flourish.”
