Circus defies animal rights call
One of just half a dozen British circuses to still use animals has arrived in Lincolnshire to entertain youngsters during half term.
It was the first show at Heckington last night with Circus Mondao performing on the showground every day until Sunday.

Ringmistress Petra Jackson with two performing zebras.
And the family-run circus is proud to show off its exotic animals, including llamas, camels and zebras, which it regards as pets.
The show also sees horses, Shetland ponies and goats paraded around the ring.
In an act of defiance to the animal rights charity, the Captive Animals Protection Society, which is calling for Lincolnshire families to boycott the show, the cast say they are happy to prove their animals are healthy.
Ringmistress Petra Jackson (32), said: "I'd say to anyone with concerns, 'come and have a look'.
"The animal rights people have got outdated views of circuses.
"Thirty or so years ago horses were kept in stalls but our horses are kept in stables.
"If there was anything wrong with what we're doing we'd be closed down immediately.
"Our llamas do a bit of jumping during the show, but it is a natural movement that has been enhanced.
"We don't have them standing on one leg and pirouetting.
"I say don't judge us until you come and see us."
But Captive Animals Protection Society campaigns director, Craig Redmond, said that the days of transporting animals from town to town were in the past.
"It's time to end the outdated practice of forcing animals to perform for our amusement, particularly when there are lots of high-quality circuses that rely entirely on human skills," he said.
"In the 21st century there can be no excuse for continuing to allow the treatment of animals in this way."

“mumof3,
quite frankly i am shocked by your stance on this. As the supposed animal lover which you proclaim to be, i cannot seriously believe that you think it is right for these defenceless zebras to be left in fear in the wilderness. What sort of existence is that for any animal? Clearly your love of animals only stretches as far as lions and tigers and other such flesh eating rodents. Shame on you, and shame on your friends for boycotting this noble attempt at arbitration between species.
I also think that most llamas would prefer an evening in a big heated tent to freezing on a mountainside somewhere. I personally cannot wait to visit the circus and let all the animals lucky enough to be involved share my candy floss and hot dog.”

“I fail to see what on earth DSS, TV, paedophiles , and to be totally honest, half of what you said has anything to do with what this is all about. And where on earth did you get the bit about the animals being able to "chose who they live with"??!! lmao.
oh dear!
So its totally natural to see these wonderful animals cooped in small cages to travel around to make your name look better and bigger in the lights and its totally natural to never be out of that cage apart from doing things that are un-natural in front of their "trainers" and an audience??!! I dont think so. They all show stereotypic behaviour which is not natural. In the wild you would not see them pacing the floor, bobbing their heads repeatedly and all the rest of it. Its not normal at all.
You can dress it up all you like and while there are still people who insist on making these animals act un-naturally, lock them in cages to move around constantly, then they will still suffer. There is no choice for those animals.
So what, they are fed and warm? that makes it all the better?? As for your comments on the paedophiles , what you watch on a nature doccumentary is NATURE yet you bring something as sick and disgusting as that comment into it? you should be ashamed of yourself. You cannot compare a nature programme with the acts of a paedophile.
It was me who commented on an animal having a glazed expression and I fail to see how being repeatedly smacked with a great stick is under the class of "having everything provided for it". So if I went and got a stick to my horses backside constantly every time he put a foot out of place, that would be ok would it? No thanks. I much prefer to let the animal live as naturally as possible thanks. Wouldnt want to be in your league.
The difference between a child in school and an animal in a circus ring is that a child still has a free choice and they are not made to repeat the same "act" consistently, go back to a cage for a bit, come back to the "act" run a few circles and go back in to a cage. The difference they have a CHOICE but that word means something totally different from where we come from.
And the elephants? Perhaps the CAPS people no longer agree with having the poor things chained to the floor. Yea thats just so natural!! because they are all either chained to the floor or doing tricks on stools out int he wild arent they!!
Well, anyway, I for one wont be going, nor will anyone alse I know or anyone they know, ect ect ect. We dont enjoy that sort of "entertainment". Would much rather go to a safari park, ect where they are free to roam, act naturally, no chains, cages, whips, stools, ect.
I think you have just shown to many the mentality of you circus "supporters" . All you succeed in doing is producing a permanently mentally retarded creature who will never know what is natural or how to act it. round of applause for you! whoop whoop.”

“I am puzzled by the comments I see here.
Animals in nice warm, cosy stables are worse off than if they were standing outside, freezing in the pouring rain, wind or snow?
People should depend on wildlife documentaries?
Watch the suffering as animals tear each other apart?
Isn't that somewhat sick and perverted?
Don't we lock paedophiles up for doing something similar?
Then there is the suggestion that those who have everything provided are some sort of zombies whose rights have been abrogated.
DSS and TV anyone?
We hear about rights for animals. Well what about the animal's right to choose the people it stays with?
The animal's right to learn?
Little kids yell when they go to school. We force them to do so because we think they need to stretch themselves.
Animals need to do the same.
Look at any circus animal or show animal and you will see a developed character.
Why do the CAPS people want to deny animals this chance to interact and grow intellecutally?
Oh I forgot. The pinnacle of their success was denying the Blackpool elephants the joy of going down to the beach for a swim.
Thanks a bunch guys. You really scored for the animals there.”

“Whats sad is that if you put these animals (such as the Zebra, Horses and Llama) into a field for half an hour they probably wouldnt know what the hell to do and the open space would terrify them. To think that "a stable" is sufficient enough for these creatures is disgusting - they get their excersise by performing round and round in circles only encouraging stereotypic behaviour.
What is natural in that?
Its a modern world with rights for everything and this should no longer be accepted as a form of entertainment at the animals expense. They may be stuck in a stable , well fed, groomed to perfection, spoken to, patted - but does that mean they are happy and content? No, probably like the beach donkeys now-adays that are un-naturally placid and have glazed over eyes just carrying on whilst they get a good old SMACK on the rump with a stick - cos they know it wont do them any good to kick up a fuss. Makes me sick.”

“I once saw a Llama riding a motorcycle around the wall of death. It wasn't a great success and I have yet to hear of this being repeated. Perhaps the Penguins may be more successful. I hope so, really i do”
