A convicted arsonist's attempt to escape from a Lincolnshire open prison lasted for less than three hours.

Lincoln Crown Court was told that Shane Goodhall had decided to "make a run for it" from North Sea Camp, near Boston.

He feared he was about to be transferred back to secure conditions and decided to try to see his family.

But Phil Howes, prosecuting, said Goodhall managed to walk just a mile before he was picked up by police on Church Green Road at Fishtoft.

Goodhall was serving an indeterminate jail sentence imposed at Reading Crown Court in June 2007 for an arson attack on a house in Slough.

The court heard that he is not due to be considered for parole for at least another 12 months.

Christine Luckock, defending, said Goodhall was able to escape quite easily and intended to hand himself in after achieving his aim.

Goodhall, 25, admitted escape from North Sea Camp on Saturday, December 1.

He was given a four-month jail sentence to run concurrently with his existing sentence.

“Come on Echo journalists! It's not possible to "escape" from an open prison, only "abscond". Don't call it an "escape attempt" just to make it sound any more exciting than just walking out of the place. It's open, no barriers, a level of trust offered to some that, for whatever reason, they just can't cope with.”

“4 months to run concurrent. No punishment then. North Sea "holiday" Camp must be one of the most porous of HMP`s establishments.”
