Council to look into extension of Sunshine play area
THE possibility of extending the Sunshine play area in Skegness is to be looked at after councillors agreed the idea in principal.
At a meeting of the town council's management committee town clerk Tony Cumberworth told members that there may be the opportunity to add to the current play provision by putting in equipment for older children.
Mr Cumberworth explained: "There may be an opportunity to extend using the gardens on the south side of the wall. The conversations I have had down there with older people are that there is nothing for them. The two issues will be do we want to do it and can we get the district council to include the area within our lease?"
Mr Cumberworth has emailed the chief executive of East Lindsey District Council about the proposal and is currently waiting for a reply but members agreed that if something could be done for the older children of the town it was worth looking in to.
When first opened the play area suffered a number of problems leading to the council installing a CCTV camera.
Cllr Gary Ellis said: "I welcome it and if we are targeting the older age group it will add value to the play area and help relieve some of the problems down there."
Cllr Pat Phillips added: "It would be fantastic if we could get something up and running for the older people who feel they have missed out so far."
If the council goes ahead with the plans they would hope to be able to access money for the project through the Playbuilders scheme which is administered by the district council.
