Super-dairy opposed by vegans

Vegetarians and vegans have vowed to derail plans for a super-dairy in Lincolnshire.

But after a day of consultation sessions at Nocton Village Hall, council officials said the mood among locals seemed to be generally in favour of construction going ahead.

Philip Rowson, a principal planning officer for North Kesteven District Council, said: "It was good to see so many people turn out. On the whole, the feedback was pretty positive.

"People did say there were issues of concern – things like traffic, noise, and the spreading of slurry – but there didn't seem to be many with overriding objections."

Resident Karen Watchus said that even having now had chance to see the plans first-hand, she was "still pretty much on the fence".

"In theory it's a good idea," she said. "But it's going to be a big enterprise and as yet I don't think people have realised just how big."

Meanwhile last night both local and national vegetarian and vegan groups said they would be attempting to derail the plans.

Linda Wardale, group co-ordinator of Vegan Lincs, said she thought conditions in the dairy would be akin to "battery farming for cows" and her members were already filing official objections through the council's website.

She said: "Cows should be in fields, nibbling on grass, but here they're going to keep them in sheds.

"I honestly don't think Lincolnshire needs something like this."

“The real, empirical or scientifically verifiable facts in this matter are:
    (1) Cattle are outdoor creatures, grazers, that use shade and shelter during more extreme weather conditions. They would not choose to live in cramped, extremely unhealthy conditions where they cannot turn around and in many cases even lie down ¿ would you?

    (2) The world isn't over populated by people it is simply over populated by too many people eating a diet that is destructive to themselves, other people, animals and the planet. 1 in 6 people are hungry, that is without enough food to sustain their health or life, or are starving because the population in a few (economically powerful) countries live very privileged over fed lives

    (3) Billions of acres are used to grow crops to feed cattle. The amount of grain required to feed one cow (they are vegan and if fed otherwise severe disease results) will feed 20 people.

    (4) Deforestation of the planet is occurring at an enormous rate, which means many people are losing their homes, billions of animals their natural habitat and untold species of plants have been or are being eradicated. Over 98% of all prescriptive medicines evolved from plants ¿ how many medicines have been lost that could one day cure you or your child? By the way most deforestation occurs so that crops can be grown to feed cattle, the same cattle which feeds a very small percentage of the worlds populous and deprives a far greater amount of enough food to live.

    (5) All meat eating animals have a very short intestinal system. A human intestinal system is very long, on average around 25 foot. Long intestines are found solely in non-meat eating animals. Humans are biologically only suited to a non-meat eating diet!

    (6) Mood chemicals such as hormones are produced in animals and many plants. These hormones enter the blood stream of animals. Blood nourishes the bodies of animals, including the flesh. Whatever moods an animal primarily experiences during its life, be it pleasure, joy, fear, misery or peacefulness, are present in its fluids i.e. milk and flesh (meat). Animal mood chemicals are present in milk and its' products, eggs and meat. The same mood chemicals produced by the animal during its lifespan will therefore affect the minds, moods and bodies of those consuming any meat and animal products.

    (7) The hormones in milk (not those in meat, that's another very scary matter) are linked to ovarian, breast and prostate cancer, diabetes and asthma. Many cases of acne, chronic asthma, recurring infections and allergies have totally cleared up when diary products have been omitted from the diet. Steroids, growth hormones and up to 53 powerful antibiotics are found in milk as well as blood, faeces and virus's (which cannot be treated by the antibiotics).

    (8) Dairy cows are forcibly impregnated every year. Their calves are taken away from them after only a day or two. Cows have well developed emotional brains ¿ just like our own, experiencing all the emotions we do. How would feel if your child was taken away from you just after you have given birth?

    (9) Also, archaeologists have never found a 'club' in any Neanderthal (cave people) excavations. In deed the first near complete Neanderthal skeleton was only discovered just over 100 years ago. This skeleton, of an elderly (cave) man, was deliberately reassembled incorrectly, giving him a stoop, when he didn't have one and other characteristics which we still erroneously attribute to 'cave people'. This was because the scientific community didn't want to change their beliefs by including a new type of human. In fact, they, the Neanderthals, had larger brains than ourselves, were stronger and, as far as can be detected, rarely ate meat!

    (10) 80 jobs being produced by the Nocton farce is no justification for this disease producing and environmentally hazardous monstrosity being erected! 80 people being able to ”

“Emma, I'm afraid you're not as bright as you seem to think you are.

In trying to look clever, you're managing to miss the whole point. Let me explain it simply for you.

The reason that imports won't be reduced is that the additional cheap milk coming from the Nocton battery farm will put traditional British dairy farmers out of business. The imported milk will continue to flow in (as it does now, because it's cheaper) and the only thing that will change is that the additional battery milk will cancel out the rest of the UK produced milk. Your equation doesn't work, because it assumes that the UK produced milk is a constant - which it very clearly isn't.”
