BOSTON UNITED were last night on the brink on signing a new left-back – but it isn't trialist Gareth Clayton.

A goalkeeper and a left-sided defender are the remaining two positions on joint-managers' Rob Scott and Paul Hurst's summer shopping list.

And Pilgrims chairman David Newton has revealed both places are on the verge of being filled.

However, Newton confirmed the left-back in question is not Clayton, who started Tuesday night's 2-1 defeat at Stamford.

"We are talking to a left-back at the moment and we're pretty close to agreeing terms with him," revealed the York Street supremo. "And obviously we're looking at a keeper, although Aaron (Butcher) is doing particularly well.

"But we do need another keeper because we can't just have one. We are talking to one or two at moment, but they're the only positions.

"Other than that, we're okay because we've got players who can play in different positions."

Scott and Hurst have made two other signings this summer – defender Kieran Murphy from Ilkeston and striker Miles Hunter from Sleaford Town.

Newton revealed Hunter could struggle to unseat the likes of Spencer Weir-Daley, Marc Newsham, Mikel Suarez and Danny Davidson initially and could be sent out on loan.

"Miles has got a lot to learn," said Newton. "He's a good, raw talent that we need to bring on. Maybe he'll have to go out on loan at some point to get regular games because he will struggle to get a regular slot when our regular strikers are firing on all cylinders.

"But we want to work with Miles – that's what he's come for – and he's worked so hard during pre-season."

The Pilgrims return to action when they visit Evo-Stik League Division One South outfit Belper, tomorrow (3pm).

Hurst is demanding a vastly improved display following a sub-standard showing against Stamford.

"We expect to see a much better performance," declared Hurst. "More desire, more effort, but effort with thought, not running about like headless chickens."

Hurst indicated after the game that Clayton and fellow trialist, winger Harry Deane, could be given further chances to impress.

Deane, a former youth team player at Grimsby Town, was given his opportunity after impressing for the Pilgrims' newly-formed reserve team, which will compete in the Lincolnshire League this season.

The Pilgrims will also send a side to Louth Town tomorrow (3pm). The Northern Counties East League Division One outfit appointed Ron Atkinson as vice-president this week.
