A dinner lady has given children at a Lincolnshire school one of life's great gifts – the gift of reading – after donating a complete set of 25 Echo Children's Classics to their new library.

Every Tuesday for the past six months Ann Higginbottom, who is also a governor of St Peter's primary school in Dunston, has visited her local newsagents in Metheringham and picked up a copy of the latest timeless tale.

And today, like her, you too can complete your collection with the great American novel, Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, for only £2.99 and the token printed in this edition of the Lincolnshire Echo.

Speaking as she presented the final tome to students, Mrs Higginbottom said ever since she first saw the books advertised in the newspaper, she thought they would be great for the children.

"I thought they represented a great opportunity to give to the school," she said.

"They've only cost £3 per week and I've not missed it.

"So I've been collecting them one at a time and bringing them in - they're a lovely set."

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a first person account of two boys, drifting down the Mississippi River on a raft.
