The hidden wildlife havens and allotments of Lincoln will be revealed to the public from tomorrow.

Lincoln's allotment and green spaces open weekend returns for its third year with free events including tours of West and South Common, Cross O Cliff Orchard and Liquorice Park, off Yarborough Road.

Visitors will also have a chance to see Lincoln Christ's Hospital School pupils developing a new on-site greenhouse out of old plastic bottles.

Council community environment coordinator Kate Bell said people wanting to grow their own fruit and vegetables would have a chance to pick up valuable tips during the weekend.

"The event initially started off with people wanting to open up their normally private gardens and that was followed by allotments the next year," she said.

"A lot of allotments holders said they wanted to do it again this year. There are some amazing ones tucked away in side streets which are real wildlife havens.

"The wildlife trust says Lincoln is a real haven for wildlife, even more so than rural Lincolnshire. This is because we have a number of plots that have not been disturbed. There are some really tranquil areas for people to enjoy in Lincoln."

“well done to Mrs Inman and all the staff and pupils involved in this at the school. The boy in the right of the photo should get his hair cut though (and tidy his room).”
