An electrical fault is being blamed for a major fire which broke out at a recycling plant.

The plant, which was filled with recyclable waste, was part of a major recycling complex owned by Mid UK Recycling Limited.

Despite the severity of the fire, Chris Mountain, managing director, told the Echo that the incident did not disturb the day-to-day operations of the company.

He said: "It didn't really effect our business in any way. It didn't change what we do at the site.

"We suspect that it was caused by an electrical fault although that hasn't been proven just yet.

"We have ten units on the Caythorpe site and this fire was isolated in half of one of them, so when you put it into context we don't think it was that significant. It didn't effect jobs in any way.

"Now we plan on rebuilding the unit, repairing it and bringing it back into use."

John Cook, division commander for Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, said that firefighters would continue to work with staff at Mid UK to reduce the risk of any further fires.

He said: "Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue left the scene at Mid UK at approximately 10am on October 19.

"The incident was then handed over to site personnel. The cause of the fire was undetermined due to the substantial fire damage.

"Mid-UK and Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue worked well together and will continue to do so to minimise the risks at the site."

While the contents of the building were not considered to be hazardous, fire officers advised surrounding residents to keep their doors and windows firmly shut to avoid fumes.

“I wonder if Mr Mountain actually said "It didn't really effect our business in any way. It didn't change what we do at the site".

Quite apart from whether he meant to say "affect", the overall tone of the quote suggests that all they do is burn waste. Does that constitute "recycling"?”
