THE opening of a new restaurant will create 39 jobs when it takes over a prime location on the city's waterfront.

Harvester Salad and Grill will replace the former Scream bar in the Quayside on Brayford Wharf North, close to some of the city's most popular pubs and restaurants.

Bought by Mitchell and Butler, which also ran Scream, it will come with 27 full-time vacancies and 12 part-time.

And ahead of the grand opening on Tuesday, September 28, the company is holding a recruitment day on Wednesday in a bid to fill the roles.

Harvester's senior marketing manager Alex Meyer said: "We are delighted to have secured such a fantastic site for our first Harvester Salad and Grill in Lincoln.

"The area has great potential and we are confident Harvester's unique offering will continue to prove very popular here. Our new restaurant will be the ideal setting to meet family and friends, with a relaxed and casual atmosphere that people will want to return to time after time.

"We are looking forward to welcoming guests of all ages."

Quayside fell foul of licensing laws in April when police stopped it from serving alcohol. It had not adhered to licensing rules, but it was not known exactly which ones were breached.

The Harvester chain, which has 160 outlets around the country, is focused more on families with the emphasis on eating, rather than drinking.

Michael Armstrong, events and promotions manager from Lincoln Business Improvement Group, said: "It should be a good addition down there.

"It's a real family place and I think it will attract people along the Brayford.

"Our understanding is it is a much more family-oriented establishment. We are keen to see new companies coming into the city."

Although it might be competition for other eateries along the waterfront walkway, most businesses think it is positive news the unit will once again be filled.

Landlady of the Royal William IV, Dawn Sendall, said: "Obviously as with any place it's better it is full rather than empty. It will bring more people down to the Brayford."

Bar, waiting and kitchen jobs are available and the recruitment event is taking place at the White Hart Hotel in Bailgate at 6.30pm on Wednesday. E-mail harvester.lincoln@hotmail.co.uk

“Pete, I didn't make a general comment that apparently speaks on behalf of 'Anybody who's ever eaten at a Harvester' as yours did. I have eaten there and I don't recall asking you to speak on my behalf or include me in your generalised negative opinion.
I also don't see how you can slate a place before it's even opened - some branches may be rubbish and some may be fantastic, unless you have visited all of them on numerous occasions how can you tar them all with the same brush? Whats the point in potentially affecting someones business because one place didn't meet your own personal needs?

As for the quality of food comment, I'm not going to bite. I never understand why people resort to personal snipes when they have never met the people they are judging.”

“Oh dear oh dear oh dear....Do any of you not know that Mitchell's and Butler owns 2,500+ pubs? That the Scream chain is being sidelined to make way for a food led, high profit Harvester? Talk of it failing is plain daft; the students and residents of the hotels alone will keep it open. Talk of it being burdened with debts is equally as daft, as any (and I would doubt there were any anyway) debts from Scream would be a touch of pocket fluff to a company the size of M&B. It's going to be there for many years to come. What guise is irrelevant as M&B will never lose the building as it is in a prime location. They're bringing much needed work, life to the Brayford, and all of us that little bit more choice about where to eat. Don't like that? Don't go.....I would doubt your custom would be missed.”

“"the "come again as much as you want" starters ensures you get completely stuffed........."

Obviously a quality restaurant, then. Sounds like something Lincoln could well do without.

Best kept in Gants Hill for the London/Essex clientele it so richly deserves.”

“Have found the Harvester at Gants Hill was good value and had good food recently - the "come again as much as you want" starters ensures you get completely stuffed, they had some good drinks to go with the main courses, and it is good for family parties as well, for all sorts of people and ages. They do vary - so if this one is consistently good it will do well.”

“marc, i afraid your living in an idealistic world.you can quite easily close down a company, declare yourself bankrupt, then open up in another disquise, with the same owners. it happens every day all over the country, try living in the real world.
emma, i dont know for sure it will fail, but i will say one thing, i bet you a tenner its not there in 2 years time”
