The Eurofighter Typhoon and the Supermarine Spitfire have

gone head-to-head in a mock dogfight in the skies above RAF

Coningsby in Lincolnshire.

The eight-minute display featured nose-dives by both planes,

loop-the-loops and corkscrew turns.

More than 600 veterans and aviation enthusiasts turned out

to witness the display, which saw the top planes from the 21st

century and the Second World War pitted against one another in

an aerial battle of wills.

War veteran and former Spitfire pilot John Down (91) said it

was spectacular.

"It's the first time I have seen these two planes together

and it was quite a sight," he said.

Station commander Group Captain Stuart Atha said: "These

planes represent 70 of the RAF's 90 years and the display will

be something to be remembered."

The dogfight was organised by the RAF Association and marked

the start of its annual Wings Appeal, which aims to raise money

for serving and former RAF personnel in need.

Rafa plans to raise money with its Brew for the Few

campaign. The idea is encourage people to invite friends,

family or work colleagues to pop round for a cuppa in return

for a small donation to the Wings Appeal.

Basil Read (77), from Rugby, Warwickshire, said: "The

display was absolutely fantastic and I'm tremendously

impressed."

“Go & ask some RAF pilots. They'll tell you.! Ohhhh wait, don't bother, instead let's just scrap the whole lot, be in debt because we've backed out of the Eurofighter deal, we'll (Us tax payers) have to pay ALOT more than we ever will for the full 232, lose more jobs in our aircraft industry, be in more debt, lose more job's within the RAF, pilots, ground crew etc, because who needs them because we've scraped the Eurofighter? Wait a few years or maybe even sooner for some bent & twisted country that has an airforce & decides to have a pop at us, because you know, for your sake, we've got rid of our greatest fighter, so we're just going to be sitting ducks in an uncertain, unpredictable world where anything can happen. And when that happens, the first person(s) I want to hear moan, whine, complain about some twisted idiots trying to have a pop at us & that we have no air defence to protect us, is YOU lot. Ever take a look at history? You moron!!!!”
