Events a step closer to quirky award
Throwing eggs and chasing leather hoods could lead to a new award for Lincolnshire.
In February, the Echo reported that Lincolnshire had made it through to the regional finals of the Where Else But England award - set up to celebrate the quirkiest events throughout the country.
Lincolnshire's annual World Egg Throwing Competition, and the Haxey Hood, were up against five other events fighting it out for a place in the final.
The Echo can now announce that those two events have made it through to the national finals, both in the running to be crowned the quirkiest event in England.
The World Egg Throwing Competition takes place halfway between Boston and Grantham, and sees contestants constructing a gravity-powered egg-hurling device to launch an egg to a waiting team member.
Meanwhile, the Haxey Hood, held on January 6, is a 700-year-old tradition unique to the county and features teams chasing a hood throughout Haxey.
Organiser of The World Egg Throwing Competition, Andy Dunlop, said it was great the sport had caught the public's imagination.
"We're relative newcomers, as we've only been doing the contest for five years," he explained.
"It's great that the public are getting involved. We continue to go from strength to strength, and we're looking forward to June when we'll have some egg-citing games on again."
The winner of the competition is determined by online public vote. For more information, visit www.enjoyengland.com. The results will be announced on April 23 in Brighton, as part of the Enjoy England Excellence Awards.
